I have to think this story about a planned US offensive in Pakistan is really a deliberate leak rather than an OPSEC failure. It seems most likely that we’re trying to light a fire under Musharraf by threatening to do something that will make him and his people very unhappy, but we’re also giving him a chance to get the job done himself. Better for him (and the half-loyal ISI) to find and turn in Bin Laden than to explain the presence of US Forces in the Northwest Frontier Province.
The use of leaks is not unprecedented. It is widely thought that the allies callously permitted Operation Jubilee personnel to talk widely about their operation to see what a worst case scenario beach invasion would look like in preparation for D-Day.
