Is this such a bad idea? Before the late 19th Century trends of urbanization and professional policing, citizen bands under democratic leaders engaged in occasional law enforcement efforts under the rubric of the posse commitatus. One thing that such efforts do is drive less of a wedge between law enforcement and citizens, permitting both to identify themselves jointly as unitd against criminals, terrorists, and others. Such programs allow both professionals and volunteers to work together, sharing a burden, understanding one another’s values, and keeping the people from becoming docile “sheeple”, wholly dependent on professionals for caretaking of and protection. On the other side, these cooperative ventures prevent law enforcement from looking at all non-law enforcement personnel as “The Other” whom they disrespect, misunderstand, and fear.
