Tom Fleming, who at times has veered off in some strange directions, appears to have become disturbed by the nutty trends on the right, whether from the disloyal neoconservative right or the conspiracy obsessed paleoconservative right. On the recent confrontation with Israel, he writes:
What, then, is Americaââ¬â¢s role in all this? Israelââ¬â¢s American supporters would like us to believe either that Israel is a just nation that never does wrong or that her interests are identical with or even supersede our own. Whatever the motives of these peopleââ¬âreligious hysteria for some, fundraising for others (I think especially of the disgraceful role played by Pat Robertson), ethnic loyalty for others, none of them should be listened to by decent Americans and all of them, so far as possible, have to be eliminated from a public debate that should focus primarily on two things: the principles of justice and the American national interest.
And, for all the Christophobic zionists and all the anti-Jewish zanies who take perverse pleasure in visiting this website that has no comfort for either set of bigots, the bad news is that we regard the preservation of a European colony and American allyââ¬âhowever troublesome, reckless, and unjustââ¬âas a part of the American interest. Letting Israel destroy herself, as she seems bent on doing, would give joy to our enemies and further encourage their terrorism against the US.
