Where’s the Democratic Foreign Policy?

28 Oct 2006 by Mr. Roach

Unfortunately, for conservatives and realists disappointed by Bush and the Iraq campaign, there is little to recommend in Democratic Party alternative. I follow politics rather obsessively and, even now, I couldn’t tell you in broad strokes what the basic concept of Democratic foreign policy is on any number of matters. It’s just endless, carping criticism of Bush. Of course, criticizing Bush is easy enough to do. But the problems America now faces are real: our prestige is on the line in Iraq, people in the Middle East want to blow us up, and North Korea and Iran are both on the road to nuclear weapons, which would dramatically increase their power and also increase the stakes of the war on terrorism. There is so much wrong with Bush’s foreign and domestic policy. But for independents and conservatives to choose the unknown evil of the Democratic Party, there should at least be some outline of what is being chosen.

Michael Graham writes:

I’m ready to vote Democrat.

Yes, the man who proudly ran Pat Buchanan’s campaign in South Carolina in 1992 is ready to vote Democrat early and, in keeping with tradition, often. . .

I only have one, small question first. Should be easy.

What are you (sorry, make that “we”) Democrats going to do about Iraq and the Islamists?

See, I’m a one-issue voter, and my one issue is defeating the Islamist threat facing Western civilization. Given that it involves the survival of our culture and the principles of our Constitution, I think it’s kind of a big deal. . .

But I think I must have missed a meeting or accidentally deleted an e-mail from Moveon.org, because I still haven’t seen the Democratic plan to fix Iraq and kick terrorist butt. Could someone please point me to the page of Time magazine’s recent “Barack For President” issue with the Democrats’ “How we defeat the woman-beating, homosexual-executing, book-burning, anti-Semitic, knuckle-dragging Islamists who want to kill us” bullet points? Thanks.

But do the Republicans have a foreign plicy either? What is our policy in Iraq, other than “maintain the status quo?”
