I think Francis often made a big deal about the Celtic and Scots-Irish distinctiveness of Southern Culture. If I recall, Sobran is also Irish, but Sobran I believe is a French name. I know Sobran is Catholic, and from his Irish heritage, I would guess cradle, but not positive.

Ivy League manners always seemed to triumph over his more pugnacious (and ethnic) peers like Sam Francis, Sobran, and the entire gang that went on to form the American Conservative and Chronicles.

confused. do you mean francis and sobran are ethnic? doesn’t that usually imply non-anglo? both are from WASP backgrounds, right? (francis wasn’t a believer, but his family is southern presbyterian and sobran is a convert to catholicism).

Buckley was one of my heroes in my younger days but the romance ended long ago. He was remarkable in that he could elicit diametrically opposed reactions from those who associated with him (see the glowing tribute by Taki Theodoracopulos at Tali’s Top Drawer vs. the scathing evaluation by Peter Brimelow at VDare.com). RIP.

I agree Mr. R. Younger people have not the slightest comprehension of how bad it was. When I entered college in the early sixties, it was taken for granted by everyone within academia that socialism was both inevitable and desirable.

This consensus was completely unanimous. There was no controversy, none; except for two outside voices: Bill Buckley and Ayn Rand.
