We were somewhat uniquely biracial, and that of course has not exactly been the sunniest chapter of our history, but even there common themes, heroes, and values united the races more than they were divided. This common American cultural vocabulary focusing on fair play and justice and Christian brotherhood, in fact, played a big part in the early Civil Rights Movement until it turned towards Black Power Nationalism and other Marxisms.
