A good long article from the New Yorker on how Obama went from being a skeptic and critic of the humanitarian rationale for US intervention in Iraq to becoming the warrior chieftan that would “lead from behind” in Libya. The most striking thing is his incoherence. He has no “doctrine” in spite of attempts of critics and supporters to find one for him ex post.

No surprise – Obama always was an just empty suit, or a mirror where people saw whatever they wanted to see. Why should he have a “doctrine”, an actual point of view coupled with coherent policies that reflect that view, like men with real experiences in the world, men like Eisenhower or Reagan or Kennedy, or even Carter? Of course he’s just a container for the views of whoever happens to be around him at the time. Why, given his past, would anyone expect him to be anything else? I was no fan of Bush, but Obama makes Bush look like Alexander Hamilton. Of course, John McCain now says that morons who fire off all their ammunition for fireworks, and then scream for supplies of ammunition, are his heros, so he might not have been much better. If ever there was a time that cried out for great men, and has so far failed to produce them, it’s now…
