It’s funny how big corporations mostly attempt to undermine Christian civilization at every turn–even sponsoring the most wildly demented and nihilstic causes–but we’re all kind of used to it and shrug. On the other hand, a statement that a great many Americans agree with is uttered by the Chik Fil A president, and the world goes apopletic. Or, more accurately, a small number of professional activists make some noises and their lackeys in the media amplify it ten fold.
Anyway, I don’t do the boycott thing much. It’s hard to keep all the bastards straight. But I do like Chik Fil A and always did respect their decision to give their employees Sunday off. I’ll certainly feel a little better about buying their products, particularly if they don’t come out and issue some mealy mouthed apology.
I also think it’s disconcerting that in the name of liberation and civil rights, the governments of major cities have shown complete disrespect for the notion of freedom of speech. Boston and Chicago officials have gone way beyond bounds and threatened to do anything possible to keep Chik Fil A out of their cities due to the opinions uttered by their President. I believe Free Speech is fading fast as an American and liberal value, as it is increasingly colliding with the principles of “civil rights,” which aim to punish private behavior based on private opinions in order to force the rubbing of elbows with those whom one would rather not. Freedom and equality are mostly incompatible values, and it takes about two seconds to figure out why.
