Best decision I’ve seen him make. I still don’t feel I know the real Romney, but I know he is worried about the economy and the fiscal cliff. This choice, over Rice or Petraeus or any other Bush retreads, show a man about to focus on Obama’s number one albatross and the number one issue facing the country: the economy and the problems caused by the size and spending of the federal government. Good call; let’s hope Ryan influences Romney in the right ways.

Yes, it’s a good call. But it opens up the Republicans to further criticism on a vulnerable issue – Social Security. That should be okay though, because as you point out it also plays to one of Obama’s main vulnerabilities. But that’s only if Romney is willing to take off the gloves.
I wrote you a while back that the election would be decided by the economy if it got significantly better or worse. If it only got slightly worse or better it would be a close call and come down to the strategies, personalities, debates, etc. Well I think we are seeing the latter case, and at this point the campaign is being decided by Obama’s willingness to hit below the belt and Romney’s reticence to really go after Obama, with the exception of Obama’s golden gift of the “you didn’t build that” line. The Obama campaign is just going to get nastier and nastier. If Romney doesn’t respond in kind and bring out Obama’s nasty side, I don’t see him winning the race, regardless of how good of a VP pick he makes. When you add up minority and liberal voters Obama is already almost there. Romney’s got to change the perception of Obama in the eyes of those swing voters who are inclined to vote for him because it makes them feel better about themselves. He’s not going to do it just talking about the economy.
The thing that gives me the most hope are those two debates in the primaries – the one where Romney got aggressive and actually grabbed Perry’s shoulder, and the one where he suddenly blitzed Gingrich with a ton of negative accusations. If that Romney can re-appear, I think he can win this.
