I think Obama has always wanted to enact gun control to stick it to what he perceives as atavistic, hostile rednecks, but didn’t think it politically
expedient before.
I think this will be his waterloo unlike healthcare, just as it was for Clinton. It will fire up the working class whites and other gun owners.
There’s been an interesting change in the gun owner profile in the
last 20 years. It used to be lots of good old boys who enjoyed
hunting. They’re still out there. But a lot more are like me: not
really hunters, into military firearms for collecting reasons and
concern for civil unrest, concealed carry owners chiefly interested in
self protection, etc. You used to go to gun ranges in the mid 90s and see
two ARs and lots of hunting rifles. Now it’s the opposite.
Most young shooting enthusiasts, 21-40 are into ARs or AKs, enjoy target shooting and competition, and are very very attached to their gear and jealous of the second amendment. This will hurt him politically
guaranteed, particularly for those of us who suffered through the
first AW ban and its idiotic and insulting restrictions, $100 grandfathered magaines, $2000 grandfathered AR-15s etc.
I think politically his proposals have lots of problems with achieving success, even if you love gun control
One, they are all over the place. Schools, shrinks, armor piercing
bullets, vaguely tyrannical ECs, underwhelming calls for research and
investigation.
Two, the ECs, while milder than expected, take wind out of sales from passing legislation
Three, the use of kids was heavy handed. The “if it saves one life standard” allows any sort of political tyranny. Freedom entails risks, including risks to life. Under Obama’s logic we should ban all swimming pools and rock climbing and enact a 35mph nationwide speed limit.
Four, NRA ad talking about hypocrisy makes a very good point.
Five, the attempt to enlist doctors–many of whom are left-leaning,
but far from a majority–will create a strong and visible backlash
from pro-gun doctors. Doctors for Guns or some other such group will
pop up before long, with earnest guys in white coats talking about
Obama’s double barreled assault on freedom through Obamacare and his
recent proposals.
I’m encouraged to see he is facing resistance in the Democratic controlled senate. There may be some move on background checks, which I consider harassment, even though most every gun I’ve ever bought was from a licensed dealer. But the AW ban and magazine ban seem to facing some real resistance. Let’s hope. This man’s true colors are showing, and his lack of sense of what Americans want and who is opposition is has reared its head again. In a nut shell, gun owners care a lot more about guns and gun control than random watchers of the news, whose attention will be on another shiny object before long.
