I’ll write more at some point. I actually grew up in Seminole County where this happened, though not in Sanford. One SDTV really does a good job of providing some context. After Jena Six and the Duke Hoax, let’s say I’m not too inclined to believe the innocent kid narrative. Law abiding people rarely shoot other law abiding people for no good reason. It’s true, Zimmerman (a Hispanic) may have been overzealous, but he also may have been attacked, and if there was a struggle for his gun in a fight initiated by the innocently named “Trayvon,” Zimmerman was well within his rights to blow this little kid’s 6’2″ 17-year-old football player’s head off.
I also am deeply insulted by Obama and Holder wading into this morass. It’s not the Federal Government’s job to give a second look to every criminal case in America. If it has any civil rights agenda, it is limited to prosecuting government officials who are clearly acting with animus, which basically happens nowhere in America. The fact that a local law enforcement agency is doing things differently, mistakenly, etc. is not a reason alone for a federal civil rights prosecution.
And it should not escape anyone’s notice how incensed Holder & Co. get for this kind of victim–which has a “man bites dog” aspect–rather than the thousands of white victims of black murderers and black victims of black murderers and Hispanic victims of black murderers that happen every day. Honestly, we wouldn’t even be hearing about this crime if the media didn’t get all excited by the name Zimmerman only to learn the guy looks like he’s from Zacatecas.
