From the big red ribbon on the White House to Michelle Obama’s occasionally terrible attire, one theme that emerges from the Obama White House is the arrogance of a clique who feel little respect for tradition. The “mistakes” such as the cheesy gifts for the UK’s prime minister or the bowing to the Saudi King are not errors of protocol, they’re a way of “sticking it to the man” and all that has gone before them. They want to shake things up in order to show how little respect they show for limitations on their possibilities created by American traditions. They have no partience for the constraining influence of tradition or the tastes of traditional elites. For starters, those people are white, and thus, bad.
White House social secretary, Desiree Rogers, is a good example of this according to today’s NY Times profile. She is typical of the affirmative action-ocracy at work in the new White House: highly credentialed, no significant record of accomplishment, obsessed with style and glitz, contemptuous of traditional limitations on her office’s role, and, when it comes time to perform, incompetent. Among other things, she has appeared in Vogue and attended the event as a guest, which is unprecedented. It’s all no different than Barack Obama speaking out on local law enforcement issues and jetting off to Copenhagen to help out his buddies in Chicago. The whole lot of them are a bunch of not-terribly-bright jet-setters who are reveling in the power and glamor of their new offices. In the meantime, the economy is in the s****er and a war is being done on the cheap.
