The Norway Rampage is unprecedented. We have not seen this kind of right wing violence in Europe since World War II. Further, it is exceptional; without knowing more, I originally and reasonably assumed the killer was a Muslim jihadist. Like the Oklahoma City Bombing, the shooter appears a deranged and angry young man, who apparently took out his frustrations indiscriminately and hideously. This crime is as awful and unjustified as it is unusual.
Governments have a fairly basic obligation to protect their people. This core value is universal and nondebatable. Yet this core value is ignored, downplayed, and superceded by diversity whenever it is in conflict. This is all evidence, as James Burnham said, that liberalism is a philosophy of western suicide that makes our objective decline, denegration, and destruction as an acceptable turn of events, proof of the advance of universal justice.
While black on white killings are often excused as the product of poverty and racism, and Muslim violence as a natural reaction to unjust western policies, when right wing crazies act violently, motivated by some combination of ideology and mental illness, there are no excuses. No attempts at explanation. The reasonable, if excessive, concern for finding root causes and preventing provocations goes out the window. We see governments behaving as they should, infiltrating extreme groups, engaging in sensible profiling, and all the rest. What does not fully make sense, and what does call for explanation, is why this hard-headedness and grit is so absent in the case of the numerically more significant and historically more dangerous threat at home and in Europe of Islamic terrorists.
