I was living in Hyde Park in Chicago when Obama was a law professor and local state representative. Being a pol in a South Chicago neighborhood made up of liberal college town whites and liberal black professionals and government workers, he was pretty liberal. And the one issue that liberal politicians used back in the 90s to appear “tough on crime” was gun control. It was Chicago’s thing. And it was made more salient in the antigun environment following the Olympic and Oklahoma City bombings. Mayor Daley brought lawsuits against suburban gun shops for “negligent oversupply” of guns. All kinds of new rules and gimmicks were fashionable. Obama supported the AW ban, handgun bans, Daley’s lawsuit, and all kinds of other restrictions. It was his signature issue. But he was smart enough to see that it was a local issue. So he pretended it all never happened when he ran for (and became) president. Perhaps he didn’t really care about it that much.
Nonetheless, it is kind of shocking that Obama has become one of the nation’s biggest gun runners, having his ATF sell more than 2000 guns to drug cartels and their gun suppliers, only to see them disappear into the interior of Mexico. Some of those guns were used in the murder of Border Patrol agent, Brian Terry. Think about that: Guns the US government sold to Mexican drug cartels were used to kill an American federal agent on President Obama’s watch.
It is one thing to do a “buy-best” operation when the bad guys are taken down right then and there. And it is also sometimes understandable to allow low level criminal activity to occur as part of an intelligence gathering operation. But it is quite another to sell guns to the bad guys. It’s too dangerous. It’s totally irresponsible. What the hell is going on here? How did this happen? What was the operation’s goal? What did Obama know and when did he know it? What did Eric Holder know and when did he know it?
These aren’t guns going to American suburbs, where the danger of illegal sales is minimized. These are Mexican drug cartels, the people that kill police chiefs six hours after they take over. The people that kill dozens at a casino for failing to pay the cartel’s extortionate demands.
The Operation Fast and Furious guns have apparently been linked to 2-300 murders, including at least one American law enforcement officer. This is like Iran Contra but only worse. We’re not selling these guns to free hostages. We’re selling them to prove, I suppose, that when you sell guns to Mexican drug cartels bad things happen. What possible good can come of doing this transaction 2000 times over in dealings with some of the most despicable and violent people on earth?
