If Obama had the least bit of connection with the common man, he would have picked up on this student loan issue a while ago and made a bold proposal for some kind of mass debt forgiveness and restructuring. Setting aside whether this is a good idea–and I think elements of it are–it clearly would be popular, bold, and would have a lot more stimulus effect than the “small ball” measures he’s advocated to date. But Obama is stuck on the proposals of yesteryear: bullet trains, national health care, and the “rising power of the Third World.” What he has proposed recently is too small and too late.
But Obama has never shown great agility in matters of politics or public policy, in spite of his vaunted genius. His putative “cool” leaves him indifferent to and ignorant of the vast majority of Americans and their fate.
