It turns out Obama lied almost certainly lied about Benghazi, covered up CIA reports that showed al Qaeda involvement, and sent a flack to run interference in the press claiming it was some spontaneous reaction to an anti-Islam video. Of course, we’re ten times more concerned with the practically inevitable affair of Petraeus with the sexy and determined Broadwell.
Individualism untrammeled. This is America today: a land that is utterly shameless about narcissism. Heartiste thinks it has a lot to do with feminism and the rise of unchecked female self-absorptions that is not criticized by self-confident men who are concerned with the protection of civilization as a whole and are cowed by hair-trigger hate campaigns. Just ask Larry Summers. Seems about right.
Israel’s about to go to war with its unstable and hostile neighbors. Isn’t it kind of the last nail in the coffin of Arab Spring that hitherto peaceful Egypt is now a launching point for missiles against Israel? Of course, this unmanageable situation, much like Iran, is good reason for the US to stay out of the Middle East as much as humanly possible. It is an unwinnable land full of crazy and violent people. Israelis chose to live their for historical and other reasons in the 1940s, but it’s unfortunate in their 2000 year exile that the entire place became inhabited by some of the most violent, nasty, aggressive, and all around unstable people on earth.
Great new book (and related Atlantic article) by Thomas Ricks about how our generals have become protected civil servants, who are almost never fired, with all the lack of imagination and poor results that entails. Once upon a time generals were canned, as are people in the private sector, simply for failing to deliver. Ten years into Afghanistan and Iraq, we’ve delivered jack s**t, and no one is being relieved and pilloried.
