Republicans don’t have a gender gap. They have a marriage gap. Steve Sailer has a great new article on this. Married women trend Republican, whereas single women strongly support Democrats. Why might that be?
Well many are single moms, who depend greatly on the financial support of the surrogate husband that is the welfare state. And many more–moms and otherwise–are living a carefree, hedonistic, but finite lifestyle akin to the glamorous ladies of Sex in the City. They don’t like Republicans saying no to subsidizing their lifestyle or questioning the way it risks a stable social order. And, for the ladies, they’re resentful when told that there is hangover to be had. Namely, that this engineered delay in family formation makes it a little harder to land a husband when the deliberate game plan is to do so as an older, less attractive, more jaded catch. This whole state of affairs is pretty bad for civilization, and Republicans are instinctually averse to it.
But we’re in an interesting interregnum from the relatively high marriage rates of yore, and the very high rates of illegitimacy, promiscuity, and related material poverty of today. And, since everyone gets a vote, we’re finding married couples and single men as well as self-supporting women and pretty much everyone of ambition and significant income being yoked to support this dubious lifestyle choice. It is a choice unleashed by the converging economic and social trends of the late 20th Century, but it leaves so many men and women disappointed and confused, and so many children wild, fatherless, and harder to control. And it leads to a great many young women losing their youth and fertility forever in a dubious quest for career success–in such important fields as P.R. and marketing for example–and the ride of her life with a series of fleeting alpha suitors until she reaches a certain age, which arrives in the blink of an eye. Welcome to the Jungle!
