While I realize they are mostly bought-and-paid shills for the worst kinds of post-national corporate interests, the House Republicans occasionally surprised me pleasantly, stopping amnesty last year or going to bat against Obama’s bullying during the shutdown last fall. But lately it seems they are reading from a different and strange script. Obama is losing. He’s unpopular. His signature initiative is a total failure. And yet we are treating it as if he just won an election with a huge, unstoppable mandate, giving in on everything from immigration reform to spending bills. What in the hell is the strategy here? Are they so fearful of the perennially hostile media that they can’t see now is, in fact, the time to be triumphant, obstructionist, and downright mean in opposing this anti-American President?
I do realize there is a gap of the Rockefeller Republican leadership and some of the young bloods. But, even so, they have coopted one of our best–Paul Ryan–and seem hell bent on giving the worthless Obama victories.
This is lunacy and bad politics all at the same time. Well, they didn’t get the moniker the “stupid party” for nothing.
