Well, Mr. Sterling apparently had to go. NAACP awards and a half-black girlfriend didn’t insulate him from charges of being a racist. He also apparently had to pretend not to care that she was cavorting with black NBA players and publicizing it on Twitter and Instagram. I can barely follow this whole story. It appears likely the ex and Magic Johnson conspired to embarrass him and get him kicked out of Clippers ownership. It also appears, like most men of his generation, he harbored certain selectively applied prejudices. He might knock the group, but he would make individual exceptions, as in the case of his girlfriend. The second coming of the KKK he was not, but, at the same time, he had certain social standards for his mistress and also some views that were out of the mainstream.
It is sign of times this sleazy hooker-using adulterer faces no sanction for any of that, but after a few untoward comments regarding blacks he’s run out of town. Our values today are completely inverted, and the NBA and sports in general are full of the most vile, knee-jerk, and self-congratulatory forms of political correctness. This scene has played out so many times in recent years, it’s like it’s on autopilot. And the idea that joining a bandwagon mob makes you a good person and shows your bona fides is one of the worst forms of self-deception that characterizes modern life.
That said, money’s money, after all. I can’t imagine anyone could run an organization filled with 80% plus black players if he was known to have negative views of blacks. I’m just glad we’re enlightened enough as a society to give dog-torturers like Michael Vick a second chance and to run guys like this out of town. Because Lord knows the main problem facing black people today is not the daily parade of indiscriminate violence they heap upon one another and others and the egregious contempt for traditional families exemplified by an 80% or so rate of illegitimacy, but rather privately expressed opinions of white racism expressed on private, secretly recorded phone calls with a conniving gold digger.
