I never had any particular beef with Eric Cantor of Virginia, but it turns out he lost in a big surprise primary, and his loss had a lot to do with immigration amnesty. Of course it did. This is a huge losing issue for the party that could be a winning issue and a wedge issue if they quit worrying so much about the inevitable accusations of racism that come from doing the right thing. The party did better back in the days of the Willie Horton Ad (remember, we won that election) than it ever has after two decades of believing-your-own-bullshit about “natural Republicans” and “minority outreach.” All votes count the same last time I checked.
Sadly, the leadership will probably blame its constituents rather than itself, its policies, and the army of K Street parasites that simply do not understand America and its people’s concerns at all. That said, at least we avoided immigration amnesty for one more year, even though we’re being inundated with illegals right now trying to take advantage of what they rightly perceive as a likely safe harbor in the years ahead. Amnesty is the death of the GOP and the death of the Republic. Let’s hope simple math and self interest begin to create a small wakeup call among Boehner and the party’s other leaders.
